ITA Airways has big plans for the maiden flight of its newest Airbus A350-900: a dramatic flypast over the Monza Formula 1 circuit. The flypast will take place in combination with the start of the Italian Grand Prix on September 11th.

The flagship aircraft has been dedicated to Enzo Ferrari, the legendary founder of the most successful team in Formula 1, which won 31 world titles. The rationale behind this choice is the branding narrative juxtaposing a man who changed the history of motor racing and the new Italian national carrier, whose mission is to place itself as a pioneer of innovation in air transport. The Airbus A350 dedicated to Enzo Ferrari joins three other aircraft named after Italian racing drivers; an almost 10-year-old A330 (EI-EJP) and two 9-year-old A319s (EI-IMV and EI-IMW). All four jets feature the celebratory logo of the 100th anniversary of the Monza Autodrome.

This is the first time an airline has named one of its aircraft after this motor racing legend; however, it is not unheard of for ITA to name its aircraft after Italian sports icons. Indeed, one pillar of ITA's current marketing strategy is linking the world of Italian sports to the airline, a choice attested by the blue livery of ITA's aircraft, which resembles the color of the Italian national sports teams. Additionally, in January 2022, ITA launched the "Naming Azzurri" campaign in partnership with the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport, whereby people could nominate celebrities of the Italian sports scene to be featured on ITA's aircraft.

On September 11th, the ITA Airways Airbus A350 dedicated to Enzo Ferrari will perform an unusual maiden flight, undertaking a flypast over the Monza Formula 1 circuit before the start of the Italian Grand Prix. According to a statement released by the airline, the Airbus A350 will be the forerunner of the Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force. The flypast will be performed at the start of the race, after the national hymn.
