Perhaps it’s not surprising that in the midst of a national crisis, U.S. consumers are becoming more interested in buying domestic-made products to help bolster the economy. According to a survey conducted by the autos websiteCars.com, nearly 40 percent of consumers say they aremore likelyto buy an American-made car due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 26 percent feeling it would be "unpatriotic" to buy a non-domestic-built car.

But the problem here is that it’s not always clear what is and what is not an “all American” vehicle. Given parts sourcing and the location of assembly plants, a model carrying an Asian-brand badge may actually have more American content and labor involved than a vehicle coming from a Detroit-based automaker.

To help clear the murky waters in this regard, Cars.com compiles an annual American-Made Index to determine which are the “most American” vehicles sold in the U.S. While the top-20 list is, as one might expect, heavily populated with U.S. branded models—including a trio of Teslas—eight come from Asian automakers. These include the Honda Ridgeline pickup, which is actually rated higher in this regard than what might otherwise be perceived as the poster child for American iron, the Ford F-150.

Cars.com studied vehicles from the 2020 model year sourced by 13 automakers and built in 14 states. Their rankings are based on five factors: assembly location, parts sourcing as determined by the American Automobile Labeling Act, U.S. factory employment relative to vehicle production, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing.Not considered are vehicles coming from manufacturers that build fewer than 1,000 models per year, fleet-only cars, and those scheduled to be discontinued after the current model year.

One catch here is that the labeling act treats Canadian parts and assembly as essentially coming from the U.S., so perhaps it’s more appropriate to treat the list as being the “mostNorth American” vehicles.
