2 Boeing 737 MAXs Not Taken By Royal Air Maroc Now Bound For Icelandair

As Royal Air Maroc decided to cancel the remainder of its Boeing 737 MAX order, the two jets destined for the carrier had to find a new home. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of customers waiting for MAXs. The two aircraft snubbed by RAM will go instead to Iceland's flag carrier Icelandair and get to wear its new colorful fin livery representing local natural phenomena.

The two three-year-old MAX 8 aircraft are now registered as TF-ICL and TF-ICM. They have a two-seat configuration with 16 business class seats and 144 seats in the main cabin. The first of the two, TF-ICL, was ferried from Seattle to Reykjavik on June 30. It has already entered revenue service with the airline, ferrying passengers between the Icelandic capital and places on both sides of the Atlantic, including Paris, Oslo, Chicago, and Montreal.

The second most recent addition to Icelandair's MAX collection is yet to arrive in the island nation. It is still only operating flights between Boeing facilities in Washington state. It is unclear when it will be handed over to the airline. When it does, Icelandair's MAX fleet will consist of ten jets, with another two on the way to complete the first order. Initially, the carrier had ordered 16, with a mix of both 8s and 9s. However, this was scaled back to 12, only to be re-upped this summer through lease agreements with a total commitment for 20 aircraft.

Meanwhile, this means that Royal Air Maroc will, for now, remain with the two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft it took before the type's grounding in 2019. CN-MAX and CN-MAY operate out of the airline's base in Casablanca to destinations such as London, Cairo, Paris, and Agadir. They were brought back into service in July 2021, following the MAXs recertification and re-training of the airline's pilots to correspond to new requirements and stipulations.

While this order was canceled, the Moroccan flag carrier still intends to update the rest of its narrowbody jets, consisting of 28 Boeing 737-800s that are closing in on an average of 15 years. According to Morocco World News, the airline will soon launch a tender to renew the fleet.

The MAX is certainly making its mark on Icelandair's operations. In a recent interview with Simple Flying, the airline's CEO, Bogi Nils Bogason, commented,
