A Turkish Airlines Airbus A321neo flying from Istanbul to Munich was forced to return after an engine failed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft stopped its descent at 5,000 feet and then leveled off before returning to the original airport roughly 40 minutes after first taking off. No passengers were injured and the aircraft landed safely.

According to AvHerald, the incident occurred on Thursday, February 23rd. The A321neo, registered TC-LSZ, was on its way from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Munich Airport (MUC) operating as flight TK1629. The Turkish Airlines flight departed at 08:38 on Thursday, 30 minutes behind its scheduled time of 08:05.

However, minutes after its departure from runway 35R, the issues began. At around 4,500 feet, one of the Pratt & Whitney PW1133G engines failed, with passengers reporting visible smoke and the smell of aircraft fuel onboard. The crew quickly leaped into action, leveling the plane off at 4,900 feet and completing the necessary checklist for this incident.

The aircraft was in a holding pattern over the Sea of Marmara for 30 minutes as the pilots went through all the safety checks before planning their return to the airport. The A321neo landed safely at IST at 09:12, 34 minutes after taking off on the same runway it departed from.

Passengers made their way back to the terminal, where an A321-200 was scheduled to fly them to Munich. The replacement flight, flown by TC-JTN, left Istanbul Airport at 11:28 and arrived in MUC at 11:39, a delay of just under three hours. All things given, the quick turnaround for a new A321 is a great effort on Turkish's part to reduce inconvenience to passengers.

Turkish Airlines is one of the largest operators of the new A321neo in the world, with 38 examples in the fleet currently, according to Planespotters.net. TC-LSZ, nicknamed Erenköy after the city, was delivered new to the carrier from Airbus' Hamburg facility in October 2020. The 2.4-year-old aircraft has been busy flying to short- and medium-haul destinations across Europe and neighboring countries.

TC-LSZ spent the next two days after the incident on the ground, likely undergoing repairs or an engine replacement. On Saturday, 25th February, the jet was cleared to fly once again and flew a quick rotation to and from Ankara (TK2178/2179). Currently, it is flying a rotation to Riyadh as TK144/145.

Turkish Airlines is likely investigating the cause of the engine failure as well, given how rare it is in a powerplant so new. Despite a shortage of engines worldwide, the carrier seems to have had the parts or spares in its sprawling maintenance facility to get its jet back in the skies as quickly as safely possible.
