The Big Catch-Up, launched during World Immunization Week 2023, has delivered over 100 million vaccine doses to an estimated 18.3 million children across 36 countries Around 12.3 million were “zero-dose children” who had not previously received any vaccines and 15 million who had never received a measles vaccine. The initiative concluded in March 2026 and is on track to meet its target of catching up 21 million children – but agencies warn that many infants still miss out on lifesaving vaccines through routine immunization every year. The Big Catch-Up (BCU), a historic multi-year, multi-country effort to address vaccination declines driven largely by the COVID-19 pandemic, has reached an estimated 18.3 million children aged 1 to 5 across 36 countries with more than 100 million doses of life-saving vaccines, helping to narrow critical immunity gaps, announced Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), WHO, and UNICEF at the start of World Immunization Week. Of the 18.3 million children reached between 2023 and 2025, an estimated 12.3 million were “zero-dose children” who had not yet received a vaccine and 15 million had never received a measles vaccine. BCU also provided 23 million doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) to un- and under-vaccinated children, an essential intervention to reach polio eradication. Programme implementation concluded on 31 March 2026. Although final data is still being compiled, the global initiative is forecasted to be on track to meet its target of reaching at least 21 million un- and under-immunized children. However, agencies warn that while catch-up vaccination is an important strategy for closing immunisation gaps, expanding the reach of routine immunization programmes remains the most effective and sustainable way to protect children and prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Beyond pandemic recovery, the BCU initiative focused on closing the vaccine equity gap. Millions of children every year miss the essential vaccinations they should receive before the age of one. Most of them live in fragile, conflict-affected, or underserved communities and are never caught up as they grow older. The 36 participating BCU countries across Africa and Asia currently account for 60% of all zero-dose worldwide. Pandemic-related immunisation programme disruptions exacerbated this issue, and, in these countries, added millions more zero-dose children to those who already chronically miss out. To address this issue, the Big Catch-Up looked beyond infant immunization, for the first-time ever systematically leveraging routine immunisation systems to make deep inroads into the accumulated global cohort of older children between the ages of 1 to 5 – “older” because they should have received critical routine vaccines before the age of 1 – who remain vulnerable due to missed vaccinations. BCU catalysed long-lasting systems to identify, screen, vaccinate and monitor coverage rates in these older children – including updates to policies on age eligibility. Countries also oriented and trained health workers to identify, screen and vaccinate missed children as part of routine care and engaged with communities and civil society to support catch-up efforts. By expanding the reach of immunization to millions of previously missed children and their communities, and investing in systemic improvements, the BCU drive has made it easier for the countries to ensure these populations and others like them continue to receive essential health and immunization services in the future. Among the participating countries, 12 countries (Burkina Faso, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Somalia, Togo, United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia) reported reaching more than 60% of all zero-dose children under the age of 5 who had previously missed DTP1. In Ethiopia, more than 2.5 million previously zero-dose children received DTP1. The country also delivered nearly 5 million doses of IPV and more than 4 million doses of measles vaccine, among other key vaccines, to un- and under-vaccinated children. Countries outside this group also reached large numbers of children. In Nigeria, for example, 2 million previously zero-dose children were reached with DTP1, and 3.4 million doses of IPV were administered alongside millions of doses of other vaccines. While these 36 countries received Gavi funding and technical assistance from WHO and UNICEF through BCU, many other countries also implemented activities during this period to accelerate efforts to catch-up missed children and recover immunisation services following pandemic-related backsliding. “As the largest ever international effort to reach missed children with life-saving vaccines, the Big Catch-Up shows what is possible when governments, partners and communities work together to protect the most vulnerable in society,” said Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. “Thanks to this accomplishment, not only are millions of children now protected from preventable diseases but so are their communities, for generations to come.” "By protecting children who missed out on vaccinations because of disruptions to health services caused by COVID-19, the Big Catch-Up has helped to undo one of the pandemic's major negative consequences," said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. “The success of the Big Catch-Up is a testament to health workers and national immunization programmes, which are now better equipped to find and vaccinate children missed by routine services." "Vaccinations save lives,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “This initiative shows what's possible when countries have the resources, tools, and political will to reach children with lifesaving vaccines. We've caught up with some of the children who missed routine vaccinations during the pandemic – but many more remain out of reach. The gains made through the Big Catch-Up must be sustained through investment in strong, reliable immunisation systems, especially at a time where measles is resurging." Through the Big Catch-Up, for the first time ever, countries and global partners successfully reached 12.3 million “older” zero dose children between the ages of 1 to 5. However, in 2024, an estimated 14.3 million infants under the age of one globally failed to receive a single vaccine through routine immunization programmes. Despite BCU demonstrating progress is possible with leadership and targeted investment and support, lowering this annual number of infants who miss out will require building systems that consistently reach the hardest to reach communities – against a backdrop of rising birth cohorts, conflict and displacement, funding cuts, and strained health systems. The consequences of chronic gaps in routine immunisation are plain to see. Measles outbreaks, for example, are rising in every region with around 11 million cases in 2024, and the number of countries facing large outbreaks has almost tripled since 2021. This surge is driven by persistent gaps in measles vaccination through routine immunization programmes, compounded by declining vaccine confidence in some previously high-coverage communities. Large-scale catch-up efforts are resource intensive and should serve only as a gap-filling measure that is complementary to routine immunization. Timely vaccination according to national immunisation schedules provides optimal protection and continues to be the most sustainable way to safeguard children and communities. WHO, UNICEF, and Gavi, along with countries and communities, are marking World Immunization Week (24–30 April 2026) with a joint campaign, "For every generation, vaccines work," calling on countries to sustain and expand vaccination coverage at every age. At the midpoint of the Immunisation Agenda 2030 (IA2030), and central to Gavi's 2026–2030 strategy (Gavi 6.0), the priority remains the same: reaching zero-dose children and advancing equity in the hardest-to-reach communities, particularly in countries grappling with conflict, instability, or fragile health systems. Maintaining that momentum will require expanding long-term domestic investments in immunization programmes and reliable commitments from partners and donors. A newly released NASA timelapse offers a rare look at a solar eclipse observed from deep space during the Artemis 2 mission, when astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft watched the moon fully obscure the sun during their far-side lunar flyby. The video compresses nearly an hour of totality into a short sequence, showing the precise alignment of the sun, moon and spacecraft, as the Artemis 2 crew flew around the far side of the moon on April 6. "As the sun disappears behind the moon, it reveals a glowing halo around the lunar disk," NASA officials said in a post on Instagram, sharing the new timelapse video. "Science team members are investigating whether this effect is due to the corona, zodiacal light or a combination of the two." As Orion moved behind the moon, the lunar disk gradually covered the sun until only the solar corona — the sun's outer atmosphere — remained visible as a bright halo. The timelapse highlights changes in brightness and structure within the corona, which become easier to observe when the sun's photosphere is completely blocked. Unlike solar eclipses viewed from Earth, which typically last only a few minutes, the geometry of Artemis 2's trajectory allowed for an extended period of totality lasting about 53 minutes. This longer duration provided sustained observing conditions for both the crew and onboard instruments, enabling clearer visibility of faint coronal features and background stars. The footage was captured using Orion's solar array wing cameras, showing the progression of the eclipse as seen from the capsule, according to the statement released on Instagram. Because the observation occurred beyond Earth's atmosphere, the view was not affected by atmospheric scattering or distortion, offering higher contrast and sharper detail. As totality progressed, the reduction in scattered sunlight revealed additional phenomena, including stars and planets in the background sky and faint illumination of the lunar surface from sunlight reflected off Earth, also known as earthshine. The eclipse took place as Orion passed behind the moon, a phase of the mission that also involved a temporary communications blackout with Earth. During this time, the spacecraft entered the moon's shadow, creating ideal conditions for observing the sun's corona over an extended period. For the Artemis 2 crew — which includes commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — the event provided a direct view of solar and lunar alignment from a vantage point rarely experienced by humans. While astronauts during the Apollo program also observed solar eclipses near the moon, those events were typically shorter because the spacecraft were in lunar orbit and moved quickly through the moon's shadow, whereas Artemis 2 follows a trajectory that allows for a longer observing window. NASA's timelapse documents the solar eclipse from deep space, capturing the sun's corona during totality and highlighting how missions beyond low Earth orbit can provide observational opportunities for otherwise short-lived events. Now, as the mission comes to a close, the Artemis 2 crew is heading back to Earth and is expected to splash down today (April 10) off the coast of San Diego.
Dubai: Steven Guo, a 24-year-old entrepreneur based in Bali, Indonesia, is redefining the concept of work-life balance. While most of us juggle demanding jobs and endless to-do lists, Guo manages to run a successful e-commerce empire, while working a mere 30 hours a week. This year he expects to pay himself $254,000 (Dh932,933). That is Dh77,744 monthly. Guo’s Instagram photos are #lifegoals for many – he shares pictures of himself enjoying in Bali. A pinned Instagram post on his account shows that even pop star Justin Bieber became his customer. On November 16, he posted on his Twitter account @guotweets: “At 24, I’ve built a life that most people dream of: Living semi-retired in Bali with my friends and loved ones…” Today, Guo owns and runs several e-commerce ventures set to bring in a combined $1.7 million (Dh6.2 million) this year. He also shares curated online courses, for those interested in e-commerce. Guo's journey is a fascinating blend of early success, calculated risks, and valuable lessons learned. According to a recent interview with US-based business news website CNBC, Guo, who grew up in the US, stumbled into his first business venture at the age of 12 – a Minecraft server with in-game perks. This "accidental" venture not only sparked his interest in online business but also yielded $10,000 (Dh36,730) within a few months. However, according to a 2021 article on Medium.com, an American online publishing platform, not every business was a success. In his attempt to start an app development at the age of 14, Guo ended up losing all his money. Two years later, Guo started selling fidget spinners online, with a budget of only $50 (Dh184). But the experience taught him that e-commerce could help him make more money. While Guo fixated over starting businesses as a teen, he didn’t take college as seriously. “[I] was more focused on my entrepreneurial endeavours, and because of that, I had a 2.7 GPA.” His poor grades pushed him further to focus on entrepreneurship. “Because my GPA was so bad, I knew that getting a high-paying job was probably unlikely, and that pushed me to work even harder on my own businesses,” he said. In 2022, Guo sold one of his first businesses, a jewelry brand that brought in over $2 million in revenue within a year. Guo's success lies not just in his dedication, but also in his ability to identify market gaps. He finds products or services that appeal to people who are truly enthusiastic about a particular topic or hobby. He has an e-commerce store that caters to luxury car owners, offering premium car covers. He sells K-pop merchandise for fans. One of his winning products was Dragon Ball figurines embedded in high quality sneakers. Guo now owns several online brands from the gaming niche to fashion. One such site even sells boxes of Mejdool dates. According to the medium.com article, he said: “Everything in life revolves around people. Instead of trying to make a good product for me, make a good product that others want. Beyond that, build a company around a strong team instead of a good idea. Having the right people in your life is the difference between success and failure.” Along the way he also learnt the crucial role of marketing in any business. A great product alone isn't enough; reaching customers and effectively communicating the value proposition is equally important, he said in the CNBC interview. In a previous tweet, he wrote: “Entrepreneurship is not an escape. And to be frank, this stuff isn’t for everyone. It requires hard work, commitment, and courage. If you want to be part of the 1 per cent, you need to be willing to do what 99 per cent of people aren’t willing to do.” Guo's success has allowed him to achieve the often elusive work-life balance. His earnings are projected to reach $254,000 (Dh932,933) this year. He prioritises financial security by keeping a healthy balance in his bank accounts, and investing in index funds. However, he doesn't believe in just accumulating wealth, the article notes. In 2024, Guo made the life-changing decision to relocate from Southern California to Bali. This move gave him the freedom to enjoy his passions for travel and surfing while keeping his businesses running efficiently within a 30-hour workweek. Bali's affordability allows him to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank.
China EU Photo:VCG A delegation from China's defense ministry visited Europe from March 23 to 29 for a series of institutional dialogues, according to a statement posted by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) on its official website on Sunday, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Chinese experts said that military dialogues between China and Europe help the two sides deepen mutual understanding and dispel Europe's misunderstandings of China in military affairs, while further affirming that China serves as a stabilizer of world peace. During the visit, the delegation participated in the 15th China-European Union dialogue on defense and security policy, the 9th China-NATO security policy dialogue, and the 15th China-Switzerland defense policy coordination dialogue, the report said. Participants in the dialogues conducted in-depth exchanges on international and regional security situations and other issues of mutual concern, Xinhua reported. The EU and China exchanged views on security issues in Asia and the Pacific during the 15th annual consultations on security and defense on March 24, including in the East and South China Seas and the Taiwan Straits, according to the European External Action Service (EEAS). Exchanges between the two sides on these key issues can help the EU understand China's red lines, and also make it recognize who the real instigator is behind the instability in the relevant waters and the Taiwan Straits, Zhang Junshe, a military affairs expert, told the Global Times on Sunday. The two sides also exchanged views on hotspot issues in the international security landscape, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Iran situation, according to EEAS. The previous round, the 14th China-European Union dialogue on defense and security policy was held in Beijing on March 11, 2024, where the leaders from the Office for International Military Cooperation of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) and the Peace, Security and Defence of the EEAS co-chaired the dialogue. The two sides exchanged views on China-Europe relations, China-EU defense cooperation, international and regional situations and other issues of common concern, according to a release posted by China's Ministry of National Defense on its website. China's approach to engaging in international hotspot issues is to promote peace talks, said Zhang, adding that addressing relevant issues during the dialogue can once again manifest to the West China's adherence to international fairness and justice, affirming that China serves as a stabilizer of world peace. Jian Junbo, director of the Center for China-Europe Relations at Fudan University's Institute of International Studies, told the Global Times on Sunday that China has consistently maintained military self-restraint in international conflicts. Should such content be touched upon in the dialogue, it could also dispel external biases regarding China's stance on the relevant conflict, thereby averting misunderstandings by European nations toward China, he added. The consultations also provided an opportunity for dialogue on non-proliferation, disarmament and space security, per EEAS. Zhang said the defense and security dialogues between the two sides constitute responsive moves that meet their needs, and are conducive to both China and Europe jointly safeguarding regional and global peace and stability. As major forces of the East and West, military exchanges between China and Europe contribute to building and promoting global consensus on military security concepts, while providing a reference for military exchanges among other major powers worldwide, Jian said.

Air India recently refunded its first-class airfare of $6,300 to a passenger after a video of its first-class cabin went viral for all the wrong reasons. Anip Patel, founder of Chicago-based firm CaPatel had to undergo a nightmarish 15-hour journey in September 2024 on a non-stop flight from Chicago to Delhi. Soon afterwards, Anip posted a video on his Instagram account showing his trip from Chicago to Delhi in the “worst first-class cabin”. “I recently endured a 15-hour non-stop flight from Chicago to Delhi, and it was far from pleasant. I had heard negative things about Air India in the past, but I was hoping the recent changes under new management would improve the experience—unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, he wrote in the post. According to Anip, the first-class airfare was $6,300 one way. The in-flight entertainment system was inoperative throughout the journey, and there was no Wi-Fi onboard, leaving passengers with limited options for distraction during the long flight, according to him. “There was no Wi-Fi, and the in-flight entertainment was down for the entire flight,’ he wrote. What was most disconcerting, however, was the condition of the first-class cabin. He described it as poorly maintained, with unclean surroundings, leftover food and trash in plain sight, and visibly worn-out or broken furnishings. “First class was in poor condition—unclean, with leftover food and trash still in the cabin, and everything looked worn out or broken. It was a pretty frustrating experience overall. Be aware if you’re flying with them,” he posted on Instagram. “Come with me on the worst first class cabin I have ever been on,” he says in the video. “Everything was ripped ruined or had mildew on it. I understand regular wear and tear, but this was next level guys,” Anip said. “This was a warm towel that came out which was served cold. Then there was headphones that came out that were untangled and they had mildew on them. Everything was just ripped or broken” The food menu looked promising but 30 per cent of the items were not available, according to him. “They only had one of each item and there were only four of us in the entire cabin and it was basically a first come first serve. This was the first nuts that came out; didn’t even put a tablecloth over it so she came back with a tablecloth. This was the samosa. It was very average. The soup was absolutely delicious. It was only good thing on the flight of course. 15 hours no entertainment. The entertainment system did not work the entire 15 hours. Everything was broken. They literally put tape on the wall to tape that stuff down. She came back. They reset it four or five times; nothing worked. It was a nightmare. It had no Wi-Fi on the flight,” he says in the video. Anip said he had hoped for an improved experience, especially given Air India's transition to new management, but his expectations were not met. However, Air India later reimbursed Anip for his ticket fare, acknowledging the inconveniences he faced. The incident highlights ongoing challenges for the airline, which has been attempting to restore its image and attract international travellers.
Dive Brief: Low and stagnant achievement and persistent racial and socioeconomic gaps in U.S. math performance have built momentum for curricular approaches similar to science of reading on the literacy front — but not all students are adequately provided an evidence-based, developmental progression toward improving their math proficiency, according to a report from Bellwether. Bellwether’s “Solving for X” report notes that the U.S. ranks lower than most peer countries on international assessments and finds consistent racial and socioeconomic gaps, and falling scores for lower performing students. The data also shows only 39% of 4th graders, 27% of 8th graders and 21% of high school seniors achieved proficiency on the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress. While research shows students need explicit instruction to learn new or complicated skills — and learning math requires understanding both concepts and procedures — instructional methodology remains inconsistent across districts and states due to both pedagogical differences and inequitable access, the report says. Dive Insight: The U.S. has experienced a decline in math achievement particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, and even more so among those from underprivileged backgrounds, said Anson Jackson, a co-author of the report and senior partner at Bellwether. He noted that debates around math instruction tend to involve what he believes is a false choice between rote memorization and a more conceptual understanding of big ideas. “Research is telling us there should be a balanced approach,” he said. Given how strongly research underscores the fact that math achievement leads to a better life for individuals and communities as a whole, school leaders need to ensure they do everything they can to help students succeed, Jackson said. He suggested several key steps: Promoting a clear, unified vision for teaching mathematics, grounded in research into effective instruction based on a balance between conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. Ensuring that a district or school has the resources, curriculum and assessments aligned both to that vision and to state standards. “Not just on paper, but having deep brain science built into the curriculum,” he said. Investing deeply in year-round professional development opportunities, “not PD in the summertime that stops,” Jackson said. “Then you get feedback on what is going well and what adjustments need to be made.” Building a “culture of positive math identity” where students and teachers are willing to try new things and make mistakes. “Too many teachers are afraid of mathematics,” he said. “Elementary teachers say, ‘I’m not a math person,’ but they’re teaching mathematics. … No one says, ‘I’m not a good reader.’” Using strong data to measure implementation and outcomes — and then adjusting pathways based on that data. “Without strong data systems, it’s hard to measure if things are working or not working,” Jackson said. “And you often make adjustments based on a few anecdotes.” Scaffolding a cohesive alignment from grade to grade, providing a clear, logical progression of concepts and standards, which guards against gaps in learning. Ashley Jochim, a senior fellow at the Center for Reinventing Public Education, said she believes strongly, based both on her research and her experience as a parent of a middle-school student, that procedural fluency needs to be taught first and foremost. Jochim draws an analogy to the debate over literacy and argues that while balanced literacy has helped some children learn to read, “what virtually guarantees that children will learn to read is explicit instruction in phonics,” she said. “The thing that best builds kids’ confidence in mathematics is skill-building,” Jochim said. “When we throw kids into the deep end and tell them to swim, that doesn’t help them. It reinforces the idea that, ‘I can’t do this.’” Traditionalists don’t oppose inquiry-based instruction, they just think students need foundational skills first, Jochim said. “The question of what practices improve outcomes is ultimately empirical,” she said. “We have to make sure we’re keeping our eyes on the ball and not confusing how a pedagogical practice feels or sounds with its actual results.” Jochim appreciated that the Bellwether report elaborated on the cognitive science underlying different instructional practices. “This is the type of conversation we need to be having,” she said. “What are the instructional practices most likely to produce the outcomes we want?”
Astronomers have narrowed the search for extraterrestrial life from thousands of distant worlds down to just a few dozen promising candidate planets, offering a clearer roadmap for one of science's biggest questions: Are we alone? In a new study, a team of researchers led by Lisa Kaltenegger of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University identified 45 rocky exoplanets that sit within their stars' habitable zones, where temperatures could allow liquid water to exist on their surfaces. Out of more than 6,000 known exoplanets, these worlds represent some of the most compelling places to search for alien life. The team used data from the European Space Agency's now-retired Gaia mission and the NASA Exoplanet Archive to refine estimates of how much stellar energy each planet receives — one of the key factors determining whether a world might be too hot, too cold or just right for life as we know it. But rather than simply asking which planets might host life, the team set out to answer a deeper question: What are the limits of habitability? To do that, they deliberately included worlds that push the boundaries in their catalog. "We know Earth is habitable, while Venus and Mars are not. We can use our solar system as a reference to search for exoplanets that receive stellar energy between what Venus and Mars get," study co-author Abigail Bohl said in a statement. "Observing these planets can help us understand when habitability is lost, how much energy is too much and which planets remain habitable — or maybe never were," Bohl added. The team also considered planets with elliptical orbits; further research here might determine how much such "orbital eccentricity" a planet can have before it loses its habitability. Crucially, this new exoplanet catalog is not meant to be an exhaustive list of potentially habitable worlds. Instead, it serves as a strategy for future research. The team highlighted which planets are best suited for different observation techniques, helping guide powerful instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope and other observatories to probe for biosignatures, or potential signs of life. "While it's hard to say what makes something more likely to have life, identifying where to look is the first key step — so the goal of our project was to say, 'Here are the best targets for observation'," said co-author Gillis Lowry, who is now a graduate student at San Francisco State University. Among the most compelling targets is the TRAPPIST-1 system, about 40 light-years away, which hosts multiple potentially habitable Earth-size rocky planets. Interestingly, these worlds may be tidally locked to their star, with permanent day and night sides. Still, Trappist-1 e is considered one of the leading candidates to host liquid water. Another standout is LHS 1140 b, a denser, larger world considered a "super-Earth" about 48 light-years away. With a mass more than five times that of Earth and slightly higher overall density, it could be a water-rich ocean world. Closer to home, Proxima Centauri b, orbiting our nearest stellar neighbor just 4.25 light-years away, remains tantalizing to astronomers, despite concerns about intense stellar flares that could strip away its atmosphere. With next-generation observatories coming online, future observations of these 45 worlds may bring scientists closer than ever to determining whether life exists beyond Earth. A study on the research was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on March 19.
The Ministry of Education has issued a sweeping set of 20 detailed prohibitions to regulate basic education, explicitly banning teachers from exploiting livestream tipping, knowledge-payment platforms or other means to covertly solicit money from parents by marketing anxiety-inducing content. The negative list, released on Friday, is part of a broader push to reduce undue burdens on students and curb long-standing malpractices in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. The regulation sets clear red lines on everything from student homework and well-being to campus safety and enrollment integrity. First and foremost, the guideline strictly prohibits any words or deeds that oppose the Party or socialism, vilify the Party or the country's image, defame the Party and State leaders or heroes and role models, advocate secessionism, distort history, or glorify aggression. Such wrongful views are prohibited from being spread via online platforms, forums and lectures, examination papers and test questions, teaching materials and reference books, electronic devices, or any other public means. Several items directly tackle the heavy academic workload that has long concerned families. Schools are forbidden from teaching ahead of or beyond the national curriculum, and from squeezing class hours for subjects such as moral education, physical education, arts and labor skills. Homework must not exceed the total amount or duration prescribed by education authorities, and repetitive or punitive assignments are banned. The rules also prohibit frequent testing that adds to students' burdens, and explicitly require schools to respect mandatory sleep times and protect recess periods, barring practices such as confining students to classrooms during breaks. They also ban schools from starting the academic year early or delaying holidays beyond the unified academic calendar. Using weekends, winter or summer breaks for organized group instruction is strictly prohibited. Teachers are barred from discriminating against students, and any form of corporal punishment, disguised corporal punishment, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, or other acts that degrade personal dignity is outlawed. Schools are banned from organizing any form of exam for enrollment purposes or using competition certificates, social training results or grade certificates as admission criteria. Forcing or inducing students to purchase books, electronic products, teaching materials or stationery through designated channels is prohibited, as is the improper selection of textbooks and teaching aids. The ministry called for innovative oversight methods, including leveraging the internet, big data and artificial intelligence to reduce administrative burdens at the grassroots level. Local education authorities are urged to widely promote the negative list to ensure it reaches every school, principal and educator.

To support WHO member countries in their efforts to implement new policy recommendations for TB diagnostic testing, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Stop TB Partnership have published today the TB near point-of-care and swab-based testing toolkit (NPOC/swab toolkit). This comprehensive set of tools is designed to support implementation of TB near point-of-care nucleic acid amplification tests (NPOC-NAATs) for swabs of sputum and tongue swabs to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) with and without drug resistance. NPOC-NAATs, a new class of diagnostics recently recommended by WHO, complement other molecular tests recommended for the diagnosis of TB by enabling testing programmes to expand services down to basic laboratories, primary health-care facilities and community settings – bringing testing closer to where people seek care. Tongue swabs are also newly recommended for use with both NPOC-NAAT and low-complexity automated NAATs among adults and adolescents who cannot produce sputum – allowing these individuals who are often at increased risk of TB morbidity and mortality to be tested for disease with accurate molecular assays. Built to be flexible and easily adapted at the country level, the NPOC/swab toolkit offers practical resources such as: readiness assessment checklists; training slides, checklists and competency assessment tools; a method verification protocol for near point-of-care testing that can be used by national programmes and decentralized testing sites; standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job aids for specimen collection and testing; a site-level capacity calculator to project local test, instrument, and battery capacity needs; and automated monitoring and evaluation (M&E) spreadsheets. This NPOC/swab toolkit aims to accelerate evidence-based, quality-assured scale-up of these new TB diagnostic interventions by equipping countries with practical, ready-to-use tools that can be tailored to align with national guidelines and programmatic priorities. By enabling more accessible and efficient TB testing strategies, the toolkit has the potential to strengthen early detection and diagnosis of TB toward achieving global End TB targets. WHO would like to thank the technical experts that contributed to the toolkit development or review, including, but not limited to, the R2D2 TB Network, the Stop TB Partnership, and GLI Core Group.
The Ministry of Planning and Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) will co-host a four-day seminar focused on strategies and opportunities to achieve critical environmental and development goals. Representatives from 14 countries in Eastern Africa will discuss how to strengthen efforts to support conserving vital ecosystems and biodiversity, restore degraded lands, address water scarcity and drought, build greener and more resilient cities and food systems, and mitigate chemical and waste pollution, including plastics. In his opening remarks, Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister at the Ministry of Planning and Development underscored the urgent need for stronger collaboration among countries in Eastern Africa to effectively respond to escalating environmental degradation and climate change impacts. He emphasized that enhancing cooperation would significantly improve the effectiveness and sustainability of programs funded by the GEF and advance sustainable development goals across the region. ”The GEF-9 replenishment negotiations provide an important opportunity for the region to put critical issues on the agenda with the GEF leadership to further enhance collaboration,” said Mekonen, who also serves as GEF Political Focal Point for Ethiopia. The Eastern Africa Expanded Constituency Workshop brings together government officials, representatives of multilateral environmental agreements, GEF implementing agencies, and civil society organizations. Participating countries include Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Over the past 35 years, the GEF has invested a total of $148 million in grant financing in 32 projects in Ethiopia, mobilizing co-financing of $970 million from other sources. Currently, there are 22 active projects in the country with a total of $136 million in investments and $923 million in co-finance. Together, all 14 Eastern Africa countries have 194 active projects with a total of $1.1 billion in investments from the GEF and $6.3 billion in co-finance. “The Expanded Constituency Workshop represents a crucial opportunity for open dialogue, shared learning, and collective action as we transition from the GEF-8 investment cycle toward the launch of GEF-9 in July,” said Yawo Jonky Tenou, Senior Environmental Specialist and GEF coordinator for Africa. “By coming together at this pivotal time, we can reflect on our progress, shape our future ambitions, and ensure that GEF investments continue to deliver lasting benefits for our countries and our planet." During the workshop, participants will visit project-selected sites in Gullele and Yeka sub-cities of Addis Ababa City Administration along with “Corridor Development” initiative of Ethiopia. These sites provide practical and visible examples of how GEF-supported interventions are strengthening adaptive capacity at the community level in urban areas. The project demonstrates scalable best practices that integrate livelihood support, ecosystem-based adaptation, and social inclusion within an urban context. The visits will offer valuable learning opportunities for participating East African countries by showcasing replicable approaches to building urban climate resilience through community-driven and ecosystem-based solutions. Dubai: Thinking of sending some cash to the UK or anywhere else in Europe? Hold on to your dirhams! Just like booking a flight, timing your money transfer can save you some serious money. The first step is figuring out if the currency in the country you are remitting to is going to rise or fall in value soon? This can make a big difference in how much money your friends or families end up receiving after you send. While the British pound and the euro are less prone to fluctuations than some South Asian ones (think Indian rupee, Pakistani rupee, and Philippine peso), even small changes can add up to big savings when you're sending a hefty chunk of change. “The British pound (GBP) or Sterling’s exchange rate has been largely unchanged since the year began, which would have steadily stagnated remittances and overseas transactions,” explained Jasdeep Singh, Dubai-based forex trader and analyst. “But surprisingly, a strengthening US dollar will hurt the pound. “With the new US President-elect Donald Trump's policies seen supporting the greenback further, the pound will stay weak for now, and exchange rates will turn favourable for overseas remittances going in December. This will reflect against the UAE dirham as well.” Another reason analysts are flagging that the pound may soon find more room to drop in value is because the dollar’s rise in value is also supported by the US central bank announcing narrower-than-expected rate cut last week and a similar cut in December. The pound is at 0.79 against the dollar. “Similarly, against the UAE dirham – which is pegged to the US dollar, the pound value is seen slipping from its current value of 0.21, which implies that you should avoid remitting now and instead send money when the value slips in December, to get more value for your dirhams,” added Trivedi. Against the US dollar, the euro exchange rate has dropped in value against the US dollar since the start of the year, but steadied last few months, analysed Pillai. It is at 0.95 versus the US dollar currently. But what will forex rates look like next month? “A steady euro seen in recent months may have stalled remittances, but with the euro’s fortunes to change against a strengthening US dollar, it would be cost effective to postpone remittance plans as the lower valued currency should taken advantage of before they rise,” said Pillai. “US rates that are no longer as drastic as October narrows the interest rate gap between the US and the Eurozone, turning exchange rates volatile between the Euro vs. the US dollar,” Pillai agreed, which is in line with the recent forecasts from top investment banks worldwide as well. “What this means for UAE remittances is that a weakening euro will lead to a pickup in expats sending money to anywhere in Europe, as the decline in value will be reflected against the UAE dirham as well. In other words, it would be cost effective to delay remittances to December.” When it comes to remitting the euro or the British pound, it would be comparatively cost-effective to remit in December when exchange rates turn remittance-friendly. This should provide UAE-based expats clarity on how they should plan their upcoming remittances to the UK or anywhere else in Europe.

Cowboy Space Corp. has raised $275 million for a satellite "stampede" ahead of its first planned launch later this year. The company itself isn't new, but its name is; Cowboy Space was previously known as Aetherflux. The newly rebranded outfit will use the $275 million — a round of "Series B" funding led by Index Ventures — to launch solar-powered AI data centers to orbit. Cowboy Space plans to do this with a homegrown rocket whose upper stage also serves as a data center — meaning the rocket stage and the data center will be a one-piece deal, acting as a 1-megawatt hub once in orbit. That engineering is needed, Cowboy officials said in a May 11 statement, to get the company's planned constellation of satellites, called Stampede, swiftly into orbit to meet worldwide demand for AI computing. (The number of satellites in the planned constellation was not disclosed.) The company also plans to own its manufacturing chain and to have "dedicated launch sites" to speed up launches as much as possible. "Earth's energy grid can't run at the pace of AI. We can," Cowboy officials said via X on May 11. "AI is driving the largest infrastructure build-out in recent history, and the power grid on planet Earth can't keep pace. In major US markets, average grid connection lead times for new data centers can run five to seven years, or more. Meanwhile, AI demand is flat-out outgrowing Earth's pastures." The company was established in 2024 by Robinhood co-founder Baiju Bhatt as Aetherflux and originally focused on space-based solar power. Aetherflux raised its first round of external funding, a $50 million Series A, about a year ago. Engineers on the team have come from a variety of space-facing entities, such as SpaceX, Astranis, Kuiper and NVIDIA (which is providing an AI-focused chip platform for Cowboy). Bhatt, who also serves as Cowboy's CEO, stated in the release that the company's proposal is "a first-principles departure from the traditional [satellite] constellation model." But before getting there, Cowboy, which is based in San Carlos, California, needs to launch its first satellite. That should happen later this year, if all goes to plan, to demonstrate the company's ability to beam power from space to Earth. A second mission, scheduled for 2027, would include a cluster of satellites to do high-speed (optical, or laser) communications. Then, Cowboy's first rocket would launch in 2028.
