Searching for "wild horses" in Huaihe, and asking the origin in medicinal fields- -Southern Chinese Medicine "Convex Source Searching Practice Group" went into the medicinal fields to explore the growth code of Materia Media
Summer grass garden, medicine ridge vertical and horizontal. On July 17, Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine "vein source-seeking practice group" entered the planting base of Baicaoyuan of Jiangsu Food and Drug Vocational and Technical College. From "looking at the picture and identifying the medicine" to "distinguishing the medicine in the field", this group of young students focused on Huai 'an Xuyi authentic medicinal material-wild horse chase, practicing the concept of "from the head of the field to the head of the bed, building a community of ideological and political education to revitalize the whole industry chain of national medicine", trying to leave a real and sensible record for this Jianuai herbal medicine.
Identifying Medicinal Herbs in the Wild: Bending among plants to tell leaves and stems apart
Upon stepping into the herbal garden, popular‑science display boards immediately caught the team’s attention. Chinese yam, Peucedanum praeruptorum, senna seed, Atractylodes macrocephala… Amid illustrations and texts, the morphological features and growth habits of these medicinal herbs were laid out in sequence. Team members took notes as they read, marking in advance traits that make different herbs look alike. Armed with this theoretical knowledge, they felt well‑prepared for field identification.
Stepping across the field ridges, the herbs they had only read about on paper finally came to life within reach. Coix boasts tall, sturdy stems; senna spreads out its leaves; Rubus coreanus climbs along bamboo stalks; and American ginseng nestles beneath the shade of woodland canopies. When two vine‑like plants proved hard to tell apart, team members leaned in for repeated comparisons: some snapped close‑up photos of leaf veins, while others squatted beside planting ridges to sketch plant outlines. Through repeated bending down and hands‑on touching, those cold, abstract herb names once seen merely in illustrations took tangible form as warm rhizomes, stems and leaves right beneath their fingertips.
Asked in the soil: blindly chasing wild horses, hiding the Huai land code
Stopping before a patch of Asteraceae plants, the instructor pointed out: “This is Eupatorium fortunei, a genuine‑region medicinal herb native to Xuyi, Huai’an.” The team members quickly gathered around. Though they had seen photos of it on display boards, some still confused the live specimen with Canadian goldenrod. This very confusion sparked a flurry of questions: how can we reliably tell the two species apart? Where does the Chinese name “Yemazhui” come from?
Squatting down, the instructor explained distinctions ranging from leaf serrations and stem pubescence to flowering‑time differences. He then walked through its full lifecycle, covering planting cycles, field maintenance, harvesting and primary processing, unfolding the complete story of this medicinal herb.
The topic gradually extends from the plant itself to the weight of the word "authentic. It is no accident that Xuyi is recognized as a high-quality producing area by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Huaihe alluvial soil, warm water and heat and generations of agricultural methods, together locked the effective ingredients. This just confirms the strict standard of "Tian Tou" planting, which is to protect the safety bottom line of people's "bedside" medication. Far from being a geographical label, "authentic" is a long-term synergy between nature and humanity. To understand the herbal medicine blindly, we should not stop at "what's the use", but also ask "where it came from and why it took root".
File in the case: let the local memory out of the field
Upon completing the field visit, team members sat in a circle to organize their notes. “What should a herbal‑medicine archive document?” Original‑plant identification, habitat conditions at the producing site, cultivation and processing, and industrial status… The group went through each category one by one, while field‑shot photos were archived in parallel.
From the forum, the team learned that although a local production‑processing‑marketing chain has taken shape, gaps remain in germplasm resource conservation and popular‑science outreach. Team members reflected that documentation is not an end in itself; communication is the ultimate goal. The core value of these archives lies in bringing real‑world medicinal plants beyond textbook pages to young audiences, so that stories tied to local land and waters can be experienced and passed down. Going forward, building on findings from this field survey, the team will convert plant morphology and identification techniques into popular‑science resources. When these first‑hand materials are delivered to summer care programs and community workshops, children will encounter not just dry‑sounding medicinal‑herb labels, but living materia medica native to the Jianghuai region.
On the way home | where the pen and ink fall, the vegetation is evergreen
As they left the Medicinal‑Herb Garden, wind drifted through the herb ridges, stirring the leaves softly. Moving from identifying herbs from display boards, to field‑based on‑site recognition, and finally to desk‑top collation, team members gained deeper insight: herbal archives document far more than plant names and medicinal effects. They also capture the local soil‑water conditions that sustain each plant, alongside accumulated practical wisdom.
In the Bing‑wu Year of the Horse, the project name “Wild‑Horse Chase” carries a fine spirit of forging ahead against the wind. How far can a single Chinese medicinal herb travel? The answer lies not in ancient classics, but in farm fields, in the focused attention of every stooped identification, in every carefully logged set of growth data, and in those future moments when children recognize it from a popular‑science card. With the preliminary completion of these archives, a Huai‑shang medicinal herb gains renewed life through young people’s writing. This embodies exactly the mission of young scholars within the Community for Ideological‑Political Education on Revitalizing the Whole Industrial Chain of Traditional Chinese Medicine: to tread the land with their feet, pass on the essence of Chinese materia medica through writing, and enable these precious TCM treasures to thrive in the new era.
