The data in the report underscores the challenges facing the global economy in its attempt to break free from fossil fuel dependence. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has reshaped the flow of Russia's oil and gas, while ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have sparked global concerns over energy supply security. Last year, global temperatures reached their highest level on record, exceeding the pre-industrial average by 1.5°C for the first time.

The report points out that global total energy supply grew by 2% year-on-year in 2024, with all energy types—including oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear energy, hydropower, and renewable energy—recording growth. This contributed to a roughly 1% year-on-year increase in carbon emissions from the energy sector in 2024, reaching 4.08 billion metric tons of CO₂ equivalent, surpassing the record set the previous year. Among fossil fuels consumed globally in 2024, natural gas saw the largest growth, rising by 2.5% year-on-year; coal grew by 1.2% and remained the world’s largest source of electricity generation; while oil growth was below 1%. Meanwhile, wind and solar energy expanded by 16% in 2024, with a growth rate nine times that of total energy demand.

The Energy Institute, an industry body comprising energy professionals at all levels, took over from BP (British Petroleum) last year to compile the report in collaboration with KPMG and Kearney. Analysts tracking the progress note that despite record-breaking growth in new renewable energy installations, the world is still not on track to meet the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030.
