Sunlovers rejoice, for the summer solstice is upon us, bringing the longest day of 2025 while heralding the beginning of astronomical summer in the northern hemisphere. The summer solstice occurs because of a 23.5 degree tilt in Earth's rotational axis that may have arisen when an ancient Mars-sized body slammed into our planet billions of years ago, triggering the formation of our moon. The angle of this tilt is — to all intents and purposes — consistent all year round, and is currently fixed with the north celestial pole pointing close to Polaris, the current north star. Thanks to this tilt, we experience the changing seasons, equinoxes and solstices — events that have been celebrated by cultures around the world for thousands of years. Some of humanity's most iconic ancient monuments like Stonehenge and the Mayan Chichén Itzá Pyramid were purpose built to align with these seasonal markers. In the northern hemisphere the summer solstice occurs when the sun reaches its northernmost point relative to Earth's celestial equator (which is simply our planet’s regular equator projected out into space). Conversely, the winter solstice takes place when the sun is in its southernmost position relative to the celestial equator. The 2025 summer solstice arrives at 10:42 p.m. EDT on June 20 (0242 GMT June 21). On this day, skywatchers across the northern hemisphere will enjoy the longest stretch of daylight all year. In New York, for example, the sun will spend more than 15 hours beating a path through the sky. At the same time, those in the southern hemisphere will mark the winter solstice, which heralds the shortest day of 2025 below the equator. You can calculate exactly how much daylight you will experience in the days around the summer and winter solstices online using TimeandDate.com's daylight tracker. Naturally this amount of sunlight makes it a challenging time of year for amateur astronomers, but that doesn't mean that the summer months aren't bursting with deep space targets and beautiful asterisms. Be sure to check out our daily guide to June's night sky to discover which targets to prioritize during those short summer nights. Editor's Note: If you find a creative way to capture the Summer Solstice and want to share it with Space.com's readers, then please send your photo(s), comments, and your name and location to spacephotos@space.com.

The crew members of Axiom-4 are stuck in a holding pattern inside their astronaut quarantine, as a leak persists in of of the space station's Russian modules. Houston-based Axiom Space was set to launch its fourth astronaut mission (Ax-4) with SpaceX last week, but the mission is being postponed again due to an air leak detected in Russia's Zvezda module of the International Space Station (ISS). The mission was originally slated for June 11, and has been pushed down the calendar three times now, due to the issues aboard the ISS. The leak in Zvezda isn't new, but a recent pressure change within the module is prompting NASA and Axiom to hold off on the Ax-4 launch until they are sure it poses no danger to the incoming crew. "Following the most-recent repair, pressure in the transfer tunnel has been stable. Previously, pressure in this area would have dropped. This could indicate the small leaks have been sealed," NASA wrote in a June 14 update. Now, the Ax-4 mission has been delayed indefinitely, while NASA continues evaluating the situation up in low-Earth orbit. "Because of the space station's interconnected and interdependent systems, NASA wants to ensure the station is ready for additional crew members, and the agency is taking the time necessary to review data," NASA said in an update yesterday (June 19). "NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX appreciate the historic nature of this mission for the nations of India, Poland, and Hungary, as well as the world," NASA added in the post. Ax-4 is commanded by Axiom's director of human spaceflight and former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson. Joining her are Shubhanshu Shukla of India, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu, from Hungary. The three will be the first astronauts from each of their nations to launch on a mission to the ISS. The quartet will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, aboard a brand-new Crew Dragon spacecraft. When the new launch date is announced, the mission will liftoff from Launch Complex-39A, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. Their mission is scheduled to last about two weeks, during which the Ax-4 crew will carry out more than 60 research experiments and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) outreach events  — a record number of science for an Axiom mission. Each of Axiom's crewed missions grow the company's experience in orbit, and their understanding of how best to operate in microgravity. In the future, Axiom plans to launch its own module to the ISS, which will eventually grow in its components and undock from the orbital lab to become its own independent space station.

HAIKOU, June 21 (Xinhua) -- For Canadian visitor Stephanie Wing See Yau, the therapy experience at a care center in Bo'ao, a coastal city in China's southernmost island province of Hainan, felt more like "a vacation." "This place is top-notch. They cater to so many aspects of wellness, not just physical, but mental too," she told Xinhua during her stay in the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, which hosts over 30 top-tier domestic and international medical institutions. Thanks to special policy support, the pilot zone has introduced 485 cutting-edge medicines and medical devices that are licensed abroad but not yet available in the domestic market. The policy has benefited more than 130,000 patients, including individuals like Yau. Her four-day experience -- blending advanced health screenings, traditional therapies, tea ceremonies, and cultural immersion -- offers much more than just a chance to relax. It showcases a tangible outcome of a key move in China's opening-up strategy: the transformation of Hainan into a Free Trade Port (FTP). As the Hainan FTP is set to begin independent customs operations by the end of the year, it is poised to become not only a tourist haven but also a pivotal gateway for China's opening-up drive. FRONTIER FOR FREE-FLOWING FACTORS A central component of this transformation is the Lecheng medical tourism pilot zone. A total of 25 medical tourism routes have been rolled out to cater to a wide range of needs, including traditional Chinese medicine, chronic disease care, luxury diagnostics and cosmetic rehab, garnering popularity among visitors from countries such as Indonesia, Russia, Spain, and beyond. In 2024, the medical special zone attracted over 410,000 medical visitors, up 36.76 percent year on year. Lecheng is only one part of Hainan's wider push for opening up. Beyond the medical sector, the province has been fast-tracking foreign access across sectors ranging from finance and education to communication and high-tech industries, as China aims to build an FTP with global top-tier trade standards. Hainan, supported by the country's vast domestic market and its strategic positioning, stands as a vital hub that connects the world's second-largest economy with global markets. The FTP is gearing up to be "a pivotal gateway leading China's new era of opening-up," said Chi Fulin, head of the China Institute for Reform and Development. With independent customs operations imminent, the FTP's policy framework, underpinned by features like zero tariffs, low tax rates, simplified tax systems and facilitated factor flows, has taken shape. For firms in Lecheng, a zero-tariff policy on medical imports has saved nearly 8.2 million yuan (about 1.14 million U.S. dollars) in duties since December 2024. The start of independent customs operations will represent a concrete step toward building a major gateway for China's high-level opening-up, Chi said. INSTITUTIONAL OPENING-UP LURING FOREIGN CAPITAL As Hainan FTP has prioritized institutional integration and coordination across trade, finance and regulatory systems, experts believe this will create a powerful driving force for the development of the FTP and contribute to China's high-standard opening up strategy. Official data showed that so far, the province has rolled out a total of 158 institutional innovation cases. These reform measures include technology-empowered public tendering, one-stop business licensing, and a specialized IP zone to support the seed industry. Hainan FTP serves not only as a testing ground for free-flowing goods, services and data, but as a frontier for the innovation of regulations and mechanisms, said Zhou Xiaochuan, vice chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA). With its optimized business environment, Hainan has emerged as a premier foreign investment destination, ranking among China's top performers. In 2024, the number of foreign-invested enterprises in Hainan rose 19.2 percent year on year, while its foreign direct investment volume climbed to the tenth spot nationally. To date, Hainan has attracted investment from 158 countries and regions, while its economic openness ratio -- the ratio of total trade to GDP -- more than doubled from 17.3 percent in 2018 to 35 percent in 2024. High-profile events held in the province like the BFA, a premier platform advocating openness and multilateral cooperation, and the China International Consumer Products Expo, the largest consumer expo in the Asia-Pacific region, offer global investors dynamic gateways to observe the country's evolving openness agenda. DFS, the travel retail company of the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, in 2024 sealed its largest single investment in 60 years to launch a landmark complex in Yalong Bay of Sanya, the well-known tropical resort city in Hainan. The project will merge luxury retail, hotels and entertainment, with the goal of building a top destination for luxury shopping and tourism. "Hainan FTP embodies China's commitment to high-standard openness," said Nancy Liu, president of DFS China. China's special economic zones, like Hainan FTP and the 21 pilot free trade zones, serve as pivotal engines for industrial transformation and opening up, Chi noted, highlighting their role as "growth accelerators for both regional and global economies." When the independent customs operations begin, Hainan FTP will create key opportunities for international enterprises to access China's domestic market more efficiently, and play a greater role in enhancing market connectivity with global markets through service trade-focused regulatory alignment, he added.

Lego has done it again: It has designed a small, space-friendly, wallet-friendly Star Wars set for adults, and we absolutely love it. That's all you need to know, really — but if you insist on more details, read on for a full review of the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship. We've had several ships of this size over the last couple of years, including a Millennium Falcon and an Executor Super Star Destroyer. Still, for our money, the Acclamator-Class Assault Ship might be the best yet. It's on the smaller side, but that keeps the price down, and it's also completely sticker-free, which is always a boon, especially for a set that contains as much detail as this one does. All those red blocks and stripes on its body? They're all printed. Affixed atop a neat stand, this is a ship that looks great by itself, standing alone on a desk or shelf, or as part of a larger collection. Whether you've got Lego Star Wars helmets or more similarly-sized ships, it looks great as part of a display. A set that looks great and that's fun to build makes the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship a sure-fire contender for a spot in our guide to the best Lego Star Wars sets. For Lego Star Wars fans who don't have the money to drop on something like the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, consider this a must-have. A quick and straightforward build Fun to put together No clever/unique elements to the build Being made of 450 pieces, it's not going to take you a long time to put together the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship. You'll be done with it in roughly 90 minutes — maybe a little longer if, like us, you want to casually build it with a movie on in the background. The bricks are separated across four bags, with each bag strategically introducing a new part of the build. Starting with the stand, you'll see the ship come together piece-by-piece, with the more interesting parts of the build coming in the later bags. The patterned upper section of the ship is a real highlight, but we also love how it all looks from the back: The engines are very effective. This is a very easy set to put together, and if you're new to Lego, it would make a great place to start. You won't find anything too complex here, with the 100-page instruction booklet being straightforward to follow. For seasoned Lego builders, it might be a little disappointing that there aren't advanced or out-of-the-box building methodologies used, but it makes for a straightforward, laid-back experience. We're very grateful for the sturdy black base that the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship stands on, but it's probably the dullest part of the build. It looks great, but stacking black bricks on top of each other isn't the most exciting thing, especially if you've built similar sets before. Still, we're glad for the uniformity from one ship to the next. When you get on to shaping out the Acclamator-Class Assault Ship, however, things get more interesting, and it comes together very quickly. It's a surprisingly sturdy ship, and although it is designed for display rather than play, we wouldn't be too worried about a child getting their hands on it to 'swoosh' it through the air. Lots of great details, despite the ship's small size Looks great on display No 'playability' but it is an 18+ set, designed with adults in mind We're surprised by just how many details have been packed into the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship, given its small size. It measures just 23cm in length, but you'll find carefully-constructed engines, a command tower, a bridge and a detailed tail. If you're familiar with "Attack of the Clones", the Star Wars movie in which the Acclamator-Class Assault Ship first appeared, you'll find this mid-sized model is very much like the source material. The Lego designers have done a fantastic job of capturing the ship's likeness. As we've said, this is a set designed for display, not play — but that's apparent from the set's 18+ labelling. It might disappoint kids who'd like an Acclamator-Class ship to woosh through the air, particularly considering this is a fairly rare model for Lego to create (compared to something like the Millennium Falcon, which it has released and re-released dozens of times), but given how lovely this looks on a shelf, it's understandable why Lego has decided to make it an adult-focused set. The curves of the ship are wonderful; it feels chunky and substantial despite being fairly small in stature. We really hope that Lego continues to release mid-size ships. For adults who want a good display model without spending a substantial amount of money, they're a great option, and the Lego Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship is perhaps the best example we've seen. Sure, it might not be as impressive as an Ultimate Collector's Series set, but not everyone has space in their house for a 5,000+ piece set, let alone the funds to cover the $600+ price tag that most of them carry. We really cannot emphasise enough the importance of accessible sub-$50 sets, especially when they're designed as well as this. If you're a Lego Star Wars collector, then adding the Acclamator-Class Assault Ship to your collection is a no-brainer. We'd even go as far as to say that this is a great set for newcomers to Lego; its straightforward building process provides a good introduction for adults wanting to graduate to larger sets but want to test out the waters first. It looks fantastic, it's fun to build, it's reasonably priced, and it makes a fantastic display piece: what more could you want from a Lego set? Lego has several mid-sized Star Wars ships, and although we think the Acclamator-Class Assault Ship might be the best yet, we've loved all of them. There's the Millennium Falcon, the Home One Starcruiser, the Executor Super Star Destroyer and Invisible Hand, all of which make excellent builds that aren't going to break the bank. If you do want something bigger and more expensive, however, we just love the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, but with a price tag of $650, it's a purchase not to be taken lightly. If you want the joy of putting together an Ultimate Collector's Series set but don't want to spend quite as much, take a look at the X-Wing Starfighter. It's not exactly cheap at $239.99, but being made up of almost 2,000 pieces, it's a substantial build that looks seriously impressive when it's complete.

China has become more attractive as a global investment destination, especially in technology and innovation, attracting international businesses with its robust economic growth and creativity, said Rani Jarkas, chairman of the Swiss financial group Cedrus Group. Having worked in Beijing for over 15 years and conducted business in many cities, Jarkas expressed confidence in China's global growth and innovation. "I think the Chinese economy will grow at a very consistent pace going forward, led by innovation, AI, and other technologies," he said. "China is one of the most important markets for businesspeople around the world, as investors believe it will continue to open up," Jarkas said, adding that mutual understanding is improving, with investors becoming increasingly aware of the opportunities the Chinese market offers and the returns companies can achieve. According to the Ministry of Commerce, as of April 2025, a total of 18,832 new foreign-invested enterprises had been established nationwide this year, marking a year-on-year increase of 12.1 percent. The actual utilized foreign investment amounted to 320.78 billion yuan ($44.66 billion). In the first five months of this year, the number of foreign-invested enterprises with import and export performance exceeded 73,000, the highest during the same period in the past five years, with monthly import and export values maintaining growth for four consecutive months. Jarkas hailed the Chinese government for its effective policies and incentives, especially in cities like Beijing. "There are many dimensions to these policies, such as streamlined approvals for new companies and initiatives to attract attention," he said. Early this year, the Chinese government introduced the "2025 Action Plan for Stabilizing Foreign Investment" and announced that it will revise the "Catalogue of Industries Encouraged for Foreign Investment", systematically expanding autonomous openings in sectors such as telecommunications, healthcare and education. These measures encourage foreign capital to engage in equity investment in China and facilitate the accelerated implementation of major landmark foreign investment projects. Such policies have further optimized the business environment, bolstered the confidence of foreign enterprises and strengthened their willingness to invest. "We're very inspired by these policies and believe they will continue to improve over time. We strongly recommend foreign companies explore opportunities in China, invest here and trust the government's support," Jarkas added. Jarkas made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Beijing CBD Forum on Wednesday. The event was attended by more than 20 representatives from Asian cities, over 30 representatives from international organizations and business associations spanning more than 10 core industries, as well as members of the Global Business Districts (GBD) Innovation Club and the China CBD Alliance. In addition to the improved investment environment, Jarkas highlighted better air quality and living conditions as key factors attracting more foreign businesses to China. Siddharth Chatterjee, UN resident coordinator in China, echoed this sentiment, noting that major Chinese cities are serving as models for air quality optimization. Taking Beijing as an example, Chatterjee pointed out that its air quality was once a major concern. "However, today we can see that the air is remarkably clean," he said, giving a thumbs-up. "As someone who lives here and often goes running — I frequently run half-marathons — I personally feel that Beijing's air quality is excellent. This demonstrates three key factors: first, political will; second, sound public policies; and third, effective partnerships," he said. China has taken bold steps in sustainable development. Its dual carbon goals — to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 — reflect the nation's strong commitment to green development. Meanwhile, China has taken a leading role globally in areas such as advancing green building standards, improving energy efficiency and integrating smart technologies into urban planning and management. These efforts are reshaping the urban experience and laying a solid foundation for long-term resilient development, Chatterjee said. While environmental improvements have played a crucial role in enhancing China's attractiveness to foreign businesses, the country's robust economic policies and investment-friendly environment continue to be key drivers of foreign interest. In a sideline interview with China Daily during the forum, Jarkas encouraged more foreign companies to visit China, learn about its rules and regulations, and experience its warm hospitality and rich culture. He emphasized that such visits would help businesses discover how China can meet their needs and support their growth. Jarkas' views were echoed by John McLean OBE, chairman of the City of London branch of the Institute of Directors UK. McLean noted that the Chinese government's policy of extending the visa-free transit period to 240 hours has indirectly encouraged some foreign businesspeople to consider investing in China. "Although the policy itself may not directly attract global businesses, some of my friends in the business sector decided to open branches in China after visiting the country as tourists and experiencing its high-potential markets firsthand," said McLean, who is also chairman of the China UK Business Development Center. Since his first visit to China in 1999, McLean has witnessed tremendous progress in the country's modernization. He observed that the world today is filled with complexity and uncertainty. While global trade conflicts persist, nations are increasingly realizing that cooperation, rather than competition, is the key to fostering prosperity. "A single tree does not make a forest," McLean said, quoting a Chinese proverb. He emphasized that as one of the world's largest economies, China will definitely continue working with the international community to create a more business-friendly investment environment and better serve foreign companies in local markets.

China's State Council Information Office (SCIO) holds a press conference on China's economic performance in May, in Beijing, capital of China, June 16, 2025. (Xinhua/Pan Xu) BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer spending in May posted its strongest growth in nearly one and a half years, as the country's supportive policies helped boost consumption and economic activity. The retail sales of consumer goods, a major indicator of China's consumption strength, grew 6.4 percent year on year in May, accelerating from a rise of 5.1 percent registered in April and marking the fastest growth since December 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). From January to May, the retail sales of consumer goods rose 5 percent year on year, also accelerating from the 4.7 percent growth in the first four months, according to the NBS. Factors supporting consumption growth in May included the government's consumer goods trade-in program, the "618" shopping festival that began in May this year, and the expansion of the country's visa-free entry policy, NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui told a press conference on Monday. The combined retail sales of consumer goods related to trade-ins grew rapidly. In breakdown, sales of household appliances, audio-visual equipment, communication devices, cultural and office supplies and furniture surged by as much as 53 percent year on year in May, contributing 1.9 percentage points to the overall increase in total retail sales of consumer goods, Fu noted. The country's online retail sales maintained solid growth, with that of physical goods expanding 6.3 percent year on year during the first five months, accounting for 24.5 percent of the total retail sales. Fu said that China's economy has maintained steady momentum, with the consumption market showing increased vitality as the benefits of the consumer goods trade-in program continue to take effect. China's economy grew by 5.4 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2025, up from the 5 percent full-year growth rate recorded in 2024. Economic data for the second quarter and the first half of the year is scheduled to be released on July 15. Monday's data also showed that China's industrial production and fixed-asset investment maintained steady growth from January to May, while the pace of home price declines in major cities continued to ease in May. Looking ahead, Fu said he expects new drivers of growth to emerge in China's consumption sector, but emphasized that further efforts are needed to strengthen consumers' purchasing power and confidence.

CHANGSHA, China, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A small booth showcasing perennial rice technology developed by a Chinese company gathered a large crowd, with many of the visitors from Africa avidly taking notes as a presenter was giving a briefing. The above scene at the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE) that recently concluded in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, was just one of the examples of Chinese professionals passing on their expertise and experience to their African counterparts. Chinese technological advances in various fields, notably in biotechnology, digital communications and artificial intelligence, have been contributing significantly to the development and modernization in Africa. PERENNIAL RICE As one of the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the "China-Africa Cooperation Center for Perennial Rice Technology" has been created to promote Africa's agricultural development and improve the livelihood of African people. Unlike traditional rice, which must be sown every year, perennial rice can be harvested several times after a single planting. Currently, perennial rice cultivation has been successfully introduced into several African countries, including Burundi, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In early 2024, a technical team from China's BGI group established a perennial rice planting demonstration base in Karuzi, Burundi. After a few months, the rice was harvested last June for the first season, with its average yield per acre doubling that of the local rice. Moreover, the perennial rice has realized regeneration, thus significantly enhancing agricultural efficiency for local farmers. Zhang Qiang, an expert from BGI Group, told Xinhua that the planting of perennial rice can significantly reduce production costs resulting from repeated sowing and seedling raising, thus allowing local farmers to devote more time and energy to other production and operation activities. Perennial rice can also effectively reduce land ploughing, protect soil structure, thus lowering the risk of soil erosion and promoting sustainable agricultural development. DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION As part of the Madagascan government's "Madagascar Emergence Plan" (PEM), the construction of communications infrastructure has been given priority. Chinese companies have participated in projects under the plan, making a significant contribution to improving the country's communications facilities, particularly network coverage in remote rural areas. At the end of 2024, construction of the EPC project for the Menabe rural network in Madagascar, undertaken by China's Genertec International Holding Co., Ltd., officially kicked off. The first phase of the project involves the construction of 73 sites, with an estimated network coverage of 2,340 square km. Once completed, it will enable isolated villages to access telephone communications, according to project manager Gao Bo. Meanwhile, the Chinese company has also started constructing the rural communications network in Tanzania this year. According to project manager You Chenyi, as Tanzania has abundant sunshine, solar energy will be used as a power source for the network, significantly reducing costs. "AFRICA PASS" In the process of economic and trade cooperation and exchanges between China and Africa, there is a huge demand for intelligent translation devices, especially those with translation functions in African native languages. Wang Zhan, executive director of the Institute of Global South Studies at Tianjin University in China, said that in the case of language barriers, Chinese enterprises face multiple difficulties in Africa. Firstly, inadequate communication in detail may lead to delays in project approval and an increase in upfront costs; secondly, the implementation of work instructions such as production plans and technical specifications by Chinese personnel usually relies on the English proficiency of local employees, which may lead to implementation deviations and eventually result in economic losses. In this regard, Hunan Chuanshen Technology Co., Ltd. of China has launched the "Africa Pass" portable translation device, based on its independently developed language model of the China-Africa economic and trade cooperation and the language resources of 53 African countries. This device can translate 144 languages and provide relatively accurate translation services for exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and African enterprises in infrastructure, agriculture and other fields. The "Africa Pass" was displayed at the Changsha expo, converting Chinese voice input into the voice of Swahili, a language commonly used in Eastern Africa. Pamela Nguji, an associate professor at Kenyatta University in Kenya, was amazed at the efficiency of the device. "This is indeed very convenient," she told Xinhua, "Language translation is so important in the process of communication. It can help people to understand each other quickly." Most clicked-on story of the week: 18 research universities asked a federal judge for permission to file an amicus brief supporting Harvard University’s lawsuit against the Trump administration over its move to cut some $2.8 billion of the Ivy League institution’s funding. They seek to bolster Harvard’s arguments that the cuts threaten the federal government’s longstanding research partnership with the higher education sector. Federal policy changes loom: The Senate’s education committee released its own higher education proposals Tuesday for the mammoth legislative package that Republicans have dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The committee’s draft proposals differ from the House-passed bill in several key ways, including by forgoing a risk-sharing proposal that would put colleges on the hook for unpaid student loans. The U.S. Department of Treasury is considering new regulatory guidance that would strip tax-exempt status from private nonprofit colleges that consider race in their policies, including student aid, Bloomberg reported. The agency's proposals haven’t been finalized and could be changed or revoked, according to the publication. The U.S. Department of Education is ramping up screening of first-time financial aid applicants by requiring colleges to verify the identities of some 125,000 students enrolled over the summer term. However, the move has prompted concerns about raising barriers to college, Inside Higher Ed reported. More colleges make cuts amid uncertainty: The University of Minnesota is planning sharp increases to tuition and academic funding cuts to have a balanced budget, it recently announced. That includes a 6.5% tuition hike for both undergraduates and graduates at the flagship Twin Cities campus. Northwestern University plans to pause employee raises, freeze hiring and reduce capital spending as part of a broader plan to address “increasing strain” on its budget, the institution’s top leaders said this week. The move comes amid reports that the Trump administration froze some $790 million of the Illinois institution’s research funding. The University of Nebraska System’s leaders want to hike tuition rates by an average of 5% and cut $20 million in spending amid federal and state funding woes. State lawmakers only gave the system a 0.6% increase — despite the system’s request for a 3.5% bump based on inflation.
