It looks like Starship's two-week-long ocean adventure won't have a happy ending. The SpaceX megarocket conducted its 13th test flight on July 24, lifting off from the company's Starbase site in South Texas. Things went pretty well on Flight 13, especially for Starship's 171-foot-tall (52 meters) upper stage, known as Ship, which splashed down as planned in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia. In an unexpected first, Ship survived that homecoming, staying in one piece even after toppling over and hitting the waves. It remains intact still, and SpaceX is towing it toward shore in Western Australia to get a better look. But the ambitious effort is unlikely to succeed, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk told us today (Aug. 7). "Unfortunately, ship recovery is not looking good right now. Nonetheless, we were able to obtain close-up photos of critical regions of the heat shield and engines for future upgrades," Musk wrote this afternoon via X, the social media site he owns. He was responding to a SpaceX post from an hour or so earlier, which provided an update about the recovery effort and shared two photos and a video of the activities. The recovery team has "been overcoming challenging conditions and increasingly rough seas as they attempt to guide the 52m long spacecraft to port," SpaceX wrote in the post. Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, standing about 408 feet (124 meters) tall when stacked. Both of its stages — Ship and the Super Heavy booster — are designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, a breakthrough that SpaceX thinks will revolutionize spaceflight. A key enabler of rapid reuse is Ship's heat shield, which protects the vehicle during its downward trips through Earth's atmosphere. Musk has described heat shield development as perhaps the biggest challenge on Starship's road to operational flight — but that challenge may now be in the rearview mirror. "I don't want to jinx it or anything, but I think I'd consider the heat shield problem solved at this point," Musk said on Tuesday (Aug. 4), during SpaceX's first-ever quarterly earnings call. It's no surprise that Starship and Flight 13 came up in that call. The megarocket is key to SpaceX's ambitious future plans, which include assembling and operating a million-satellite AI constellation in Earth orbit. Flight 13 was similar to previous Starship test missions; it was a suborbital jaunt that ended with Super Heavy coming down in the Gulf of Mexico and Ship landing in the Indian Ocean. There was a big milestone, however, in addition to Ship's unexpected transition to seagoing vessel: During its time in space, the upper stage deployed 20 functional Starlink V3 satellites, the bigger, next-gen variant of SpaceX's broadband spacecraft. These satellites quickly came back down to Earth on July 24, but Flight 13 was a vision of the future nonetheless. SpaceX wants to operate a constellation of 100,000 or so Starlink V3s, and this network will be lofted by Starship.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, 7 August 2026 – The Silk Road Caravan, a global outreach campaign shining the spotlight on rangelands and pastoralists, today begins its journey across Mongolia, just days before the start of the seventeenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Ulaanbaatar on 17 August. For millennia, the Mongolian steppe has witnessed the movement of people, goods and ideas across Eurasia. The Orkhon Valley, one of Mongolia's most important historical landscapes, served as the political and cultural centre of successive nomadic empires, while generations of pastoralists developed a way of life that still defines Mongolia today. This August, that story continues. Ahead of UNCCD COP17, the UNCCD Silk Road Caravan arrives in Mongolia after travelling more than 6,000 kilometres, across Eurasia. Along the way, it has brought together pastoralists, scientists, policymakers, young people and local communities to share experiences and practical solutions for restoring rangelands and building resilience to increasing drought conditions. Launched by the UNCCD in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 (IYRP 2026), the Silk Road Caravan follows the spirit of the historic routes that once linked Asia and Europe. Since departing Türkiye in May, participants have travelled through the Russian Federation, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and China, visiting restoration initiatives and meeting local communities along the way. The journey has highlighted how dedicated efforts and cooperation at all levels can help restore degraded land. Rangelands cover 54 per cent of the Earth's land surface, support around two billion people, provide nearly 70 per cent of global livestock feed and store vast amounts of carbon. Yet up to half are already degraded, putting biodiversity, food production and rural livelihoods at risk. The experiences gathered along the Caravan will now be carried into COP17, where countries will consider the next steps for restoring and protecting rangelands. In Mongolia, rangelands are the foundation of pastoral life. Covering around 70 per cent of the national territory, they support the livelihoods of approximately one third of the population and form one of the world's largest remaining pastoral landscapes. Yet these same landscapes are under increasing pressure. Nearly 77 per cent of Mongolia's land is affected by degradation. Droughts are becoming more frequent, while the annual number of sand and dust storm days has more than tripled since the 1960s. In 2023–2024, a devastating combination of summer drought followed by the harsh winter known as dzud resulted in the loss of more than seven million livestock. The disaster showed how exposed pastoral communities are to drought and climate extremes. The challenges facing Mongolia are shared by many dryland countries. From 17 to 28 August, COP17 will bring together governments, scientists, Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists, civil society organizations, businesses and international organizations in Ulaanbaatar to discuss practical solutions for land restoration, drought and sustainable rangeland management. As the first of this year's three Rio conventions’ Conferences of the Parties (COP), it is expected to help shape the international agenda on land. Coinciding with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, UNCCD COP17 will also highlight the vital role of rangelands in supporting food security, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and rural livelihoods. Silk Road Caravan participants will spend a week travelling across Mongolia, from the Gobi Desert to the forests and grasslands of the country's centre. They will meet nomadic herder families, researchers, local authorities and pastoral cooperatives, and visit land restoration projects. The route includes Hustai National Park, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, the Ramsar-listed Ugii Lake and the Mini Naadam festival. Participants will see first-hand how people across Mongolia's rangelands are responding to land degradation and drought. They will also join activities marking the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists before reaching Ulaanbaatar in time for COP17. NOTE TO EDITORS Media opportunities During the Mongolian leg of the Silk Road Caravan, accredited media will have opportunities to: Visit land restoration sites across the Gobi Desert and central Mongolia. Meet nomadic herder families and pastoral cooperatives. Learn about community-based rangeland restoration and sustainable grazing practices. Visit Hustai National Park, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape and the Ramsar-listed Ugii Lake. Interview international Caravan participants, Mongolian experts and UNCCD representatives. Cover the conclusion of the Silk Road Caravan ahead of the opening of UNCCD COP17. Media accreditation Accreditation for media representatives covering UNCCD COP17 is now open. Journalists are encouraged to apply through the United Nations Online Registration System (ORS), the official platform for media accreditation. The Silk Road Caravan is a flagship UNCCD campaign linking COP16 in Riyadh (2024) to COP17 in Ulaanbaatar (2026), in support of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026. From the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula to the vast grasslands of Eurasia, this symbolic and physical caravan journey will shine a light on rangeland ecosystems and the pastoral communities that have shaped life along these routes for generations. It aims to raise awareness of the critical role of rangelands, which cover more than half of the Earth’s land surface and support two billion people globally. Through a combination of field visits, storytelling, and a documentary film, the initiative highlights both the challenges of land degradation and the solutions emerging from local communities. More information about the Silk Road Caravan: silkroadcaravan.org About UNCCD The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the global vision and voice for land. We unite governments, scientists, policymakers, private sector and communities around a shared vision and global action to restore and manage the world’s land for the sustainability of humanity and the planet. Much more than an international treaty signed by 197 Parties, UNCCD is a multilateral commitment to mitigating today’s impacts of land degradation and advancing tomorrow’s land stewardship in order to provide food, water, shelter and economic opportunity to all people in an equitable and inclusive manner.

On International Youth Day, we celebrate the energy, creativity and leadership of young people around the world. This year's theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, reminds us that while young people live in different circumstances, they share common hopes for good health, dignity, opportunity and a sustainable future. Yet for millions of young people, preventable and treatable diseases continue to stand in the way of these aspirations. HIV, tuberculosis (TB), viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to affect the health, well-being and futures of millions of adolescents and young people. Despite important progress, preventable infections, illness and deaths persist, and access to prevention, testing, treatment and care remains unequal. These inequities are particularly acute for young people from key and vulnerable populations – including young men who have sex with men, transgender people, sex workers and people who use drugs – as well as young people affected by poverty, displacement and other forms of marginalization. Stigma and discrimination, gender inequality, violence, poverty and restrictive social and legal environments can further limit access to youth-responsive prevention, testing, treatment and care. Yet young people are not only affected by these challenges; they are helping to solve them. Through WHO’s 1+1 Initiative, more than 90 000 young people have joined the global effort to end TB by raising awareness, challenging stigma and mobilizing communities for stronger action. What began as a movement to mobilize young people around TB has become a powerful demonstration of what is possible when young people are given the opportunity, knowledge and platforms to lead. Building on this momentum, WHO is expanding the 1+1 Initiative across HIV, TB, viral hepatitis and STIs, creating a broader platform to amplify young people’s voices and strengthen their leadership across these interconnected disease areas. On International Youth Day, WHO calls on young people everywhere to turn common aspirations into collective action. Raise awareness. Start conversations about HIV, TB, viral hepatitis and STIs in your schools, universities, workplaces, communities and networks. Stay informed and share trusted information. Use WHO’s evidence and resources on HIV, TB, hepatitis and STIs to learn about prevention, testing, treatment and care, and help counter misinformation. Challenge stigma and discrimination. Support everyone's right to respectful, confidential and people-centred health services. Use your voice and leadership. Help shape the policies, programmes and services that affect your health, and ensure that young people-especially those most affected-have a meaningful role in decision-making. Bring youth perspectives into decision-making and help ensure that the voices of those most affected are heard. Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow. They are partners and leaders in the global health response today. Their voices, innovative ideas and leadership are essential to ending HIV, TB, viral hepatitis and STIs and building a healthier, and more equitable future for all.

The final resting place of SpaceX's moon-smashing rocket has been found. The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, known as Danuri, has captured imagery of the crater blasted out by the Falcon 9 upper stage that slammed into the moon early on Wednesday morning (Aug. 5). "Danuri began observations about 30 minutes before the collision and, through orbit control, passed over the impact site multiple times, conducting a total of 8 imaging sessions," officials with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said via X this morning (Aug. 6). "Through this observation, changes in the terrain around the impact site and traces of ejecta spread were confirmed." "Danuri secured both pre-collision and immediate post-collision footage, enabling analysis of changes caused solely by the collision and providing important research data," they added in the X post, which shared several before-and-after images of the impact site. The Falcon 9 in question launched on Jan. 15, 2025, sending two private robotic moon landers — Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience — to a high, moon-crossing Earth orbit. The duo then made their own way to the moon; Blue Ghost landed successfully on March 2 of that year, but Resilience crashed during its touchdown attempt. The Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth shortly after liftoff for recovery and reuse, as such boosters commonly do. Falcon 9 upper stages, by contrast, are expendable. SpaceX usually disposes of them in Earth's atmosphere, but the upper stage on the Blue Ghost-Resilience mission used almost all of its fuel getting its payloads to their distant destination. So the 8,800-pound (4,000 kilograms) rocket body remained up there, orbiting Earth — until solar activity and gravitational forces pushed it on a collision course for the moon. That collision occurred at 2:34 a.m. EDT (0634 GMT) on Wednesday, according to KARI officials — right in line with predictions. Scientists calculated some other parameters ahead of time as well. For example, the rocket body probably hit the moon at about 5,400 mph (8,690 kph), gouging out a crater up to 89 feet (27 meters) wide. The new observations by Danuri, as well as future work by other lunar probes, will help verify such predictions. "The observation data secured by Danuri will be linked with follow-up observations from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and utilized in international collaborative research," KARI officials said in the X post. It may be that some ground-based telescopes caught the impact as well. Astronomers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain believe they captured a video of ejected material blasting off of the lunar surface around the predicted time of impact: The Falcon 9 upper stage wasn't the first rocket body to slam into the moon. The third stage of a Chinese Long March 3C crashed into the lunar surface on March 4, 2022, for example. And the third stage of NASA's Saturn V rocket gouged out craters during multiple Apollo moon missions. Danuri is South Korea's first lunar probe. The spacecraft launched on Aug. 4, 2022 atop a Falcon 9 and began circling the moon four months later. It carries six payloads, five of them provided by Korean universities and research organizations. The sixth is a NASA instrument called ShadowCam, which hunts for signs of water ice in permanently shadowed regions at the lunar poles.

Most-clicked story of the week: In an Aug. 4 address to special education project directors and staff, U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon touted the U.S. Department of Education’s controversial June interagency agreement to transfer some of its special education responsibilities to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. McMahon defended the Education Department’s interagency agreement — one of 14 agreements it has with six other federal agencies — and said that “none of the rights guaranteed to individuals with disabilities under federal law will change.” She added that the changes are the “start of a brighter future” for individuals with disabilities. HHS attempts sweeping changes Under a proposed rule announced by HHS on Aug. 6, Head Start programs would face significant changes, including the removal of federal regulations for class ratios and sizes, curricula expectations and certain staffing mandates. The reforms to the 61-year-old early childhood education program are projected to add 236,000 Head Start slots for children and save $2.2 billion, a senior HHS official said. Earlier this summer, HHS also abruptly canceled 53 of the 66 current grants issued under the bipartisan Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, which awards $101 million annually to nonprofit, community and school-based partnerships nationwide. The program aims to help teens reduce risky sexual behaviors and, ultimately, decrease sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. A lawsuit has since been filed against HHS, asking for the agency to administer the existing grants as required by federal law. Efforts exploring safeguards, effective use of tech As pressures mount to pass federal online safety laws for young people, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on Aug. 5 greenlit the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act along with three other bills seeking youth protections for artificial intelligence use. The four bills approved during the markup session now head to the Senate floor for a full vote. KOSA, which also previously passed the full Senate in 2024, would require online platforms, including social media, to implement tools and safeguards for children and teens. While schools grapple with their own use of technology in the classroom, a new study by WestEd found that implementing outcomes-based contracting in some schools for tutoring and ed tech interventions led to positive effects on academic achievement. This new type of procurement process allows districts to tie a portion of their compensation to an ed tech provider based on a product’s ability to produce measurable results for a certain group of students. Google’s AI-generated summaries appearing at the top of the search engine’s results have become the norm. But many school districts are skeptical of the tool. Amanda Kordeliski, president of the American Association of School Librarians, said she’s noticed that many schools nationwide are prohibiting students from conversing with Google’s AI summary chatbot on district devices. Quote of the week: In a CNN interview on Aug. 2, Kennedy said the measles vaccine is effective. The comment was notable given Kennedy’s history expressing antipathy to vaccines and as measles cases reported this year have already reached a 35-year high nationally, as of July 30, at 2,371. With this trend in measles rates, health experts are advising schools to prepare for potential outbreaks of the highly contagious virus.

SpaceX sent yet another batch of its Starlink internet satellites skyward today (Aug. 11). A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station today at 11:58 a.m. EDT (1558 GMT), carrying 29 of the broadband spacecraft toward low Earth orbit (LEO). About 8.5 minutes later, the rocket's first stage made a pinpoint landing in the Atlantic Ocean atop the SpaceX droneship "A Shortfall of Gravitas." It was the 18th flight for this particular booster, which is designated B1085. Though more than half its liftoffs have been Starlink flights, B1085 also has some astronaut missions under its belt. The booster lofted SpaceX's Crew-9 flight to the International Space Station in September 2024, and it launched the Fram2 mission around Earth's poles six months later. The Falcon 9's upper stage, meanwhile, continued hauling the 29 Starlink satellites to LEO today. They'll be deployed there 64 minutes after liftoff, if all goes to plan. Today's liftoff was the 93rd Falcon 9 launch of the year already. Seventy-two of those missions have been devoted to building out Starlink, the largest satellite constellation ever assembled. Starlink currently consists of more than 10,900 active satellites, according to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell. But SpaceX has even bigger megaconstellations in mind: Eventually, the company wants to operate 100,000 of its bigger, more capable Starlink V3 satellites, and Elon Musk has stated an ambition to launch a million AI data center satellites to Earth orbit as well.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China aims to establish a modern coal industry system by 2030 as the country seeks to balance energy security with green transition, according to a recently issued development plan. The plan, released Monday by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, said China will accelerate the optimization and upgrading of its coal industry structure during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030) as the country's coal consumption is expected to peak. It calls for higher access standards for coal resource development, greater efforts to develop advanced production capacity, the orderly phase-out of outdated and inefficient capacity, and a prudent approach to the exploitation of deep coal resources. By 2030, large modern coal mines are expected to account for 87 percent of China's total coal production capacity, while intelligent mines will make up 75 percent. The country's five major coal supply bases are expected to contribute more than 80 percent of national output, according to the plan. An intelligent coal mine is a digitally connected and highly-automated worksite that uses AI and real-time data to optimize mining operations, while minimizing human intervention and hazards. Coal remains an important pillar of China's energy security as the country accelerates its green transition. China aims to peak coal consumption by 2030 and increase the share of non-fossil energy in total energy consumption to 25 percent, putting greater emphasis on cleaner, more efficient and intelligent coal production and use. Guided by the latest plan, China's coal industry is expected to become increasingly concentrated during the 2026-2030 period, with smaller mines prone to accidents and those with depleted resources exiting the market at a faster pace, said Qu Yang, a researcher with the Coal Industry Planning and Design Research Institute. The plan calls for actively promoting clean substitution for coal, significantly improving the quality of commercial coal, accelerating the transformation and upgrading of coal-fired power generation, and orderly expanding the use of coal as an industrial feedstock. The plan also urges scaled-up development and utilization of coalbed methane, which offers multiple benefits, such as improving coal mine safety, boosting clean energy supply and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. According to an annex to the plan, China aims to produce 26 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane and utilize 6.5 billion cubic meters of coal mine gas by 2030.
